Punjab Opposition Leader Raja Riaz on Wednesday accused Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif of threatening to kill him for calling him a Mughal prince and criticising his behaviour as a ruler.
He was holding a press conference at the Punjab Assembly (PA) Committee Room. Former Punjab labour minister Ashraf Sohna and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Punjab Deputy Parliamentary Leader Shaukat Basra were also present. Riaz said that if anything happened to him, Shahbaz would be responsible adding that he had informed the quarters concerned about the threats posed to him by the CM.
The Punjab opposition leader said that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif was conspiring against the democratic government due to his anti-democracy behaviour, which he inherited from army generals. Responding to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) demand seeking the PM’s resignation, Riaz said that the demand was unnecessary and the PPP Punjab Parliamentary Body rejected all such demands.
Questioning the performance of the Punjab government, the PPP leader asked Shahbaz 10 questions and alleged that corruption and mismanagement in all departments was at its peak. Declaring the Punjab government’s performance as zero, Riaz said that Shahbaz’s wrong policies had destroyed the whole province. He said that the PPP had raised 10 questions about the provincial government’s performance regarding law and order, culture, education, health, C&W, E&T, LDA, WASA, irrigation, food, agriculture and revenue departments.
The Punjab opposition leader said that Shahbaz was doing nothing for the betterment of the Punjab Excise and Taxation Department except supervising issuance of permits. The PPP did not want to initiate the politics of turncoats owing to which it was perusing the policy of reconciliation in the province. On being asked that why the PPP did not question Shahbaz’s performance when it was the PML-N’s coalition partner for nearly three years, Riaz said that PPP ministers did not have any authority and even department secretaries were not made answerable to them.
He said that staff of the ministries headed by PPP ministers were directed not to implement the ministers’ orders and the ministers could not even convene meetings of their departments. The PPP leader said that the CM’s announcement to visit Karachi along with a delegation for restoration of peace was just a political stunt. The Punjab opposition leader said that maintenance of peace in Sindh was the responsibility of the Sindh government, which was working hard in this regard. He said that President Asif Ali Zardari was directly supervising the on-going operation in Karachi and the situation in the port city would soon be normal.
Riaz said that the PPP rejected the demand of deploying the army in Karachi, as only those people were raising such demands who had called the army in WAPDA and now they were conspiring against the country but would fail miserably.
i have heard that a special committee has been formed to formulate recommendations on how to off Raja Sahib. After the committee prepares its report, it is also rumoured that the honourable CM will be present on the spot wearing his gumboots to micro-manage the killing. By the time the government actually gets around to implementing the recommendations, power will have shifted and all will be for nought. how typical of the punjab administration.
