The Awami Jamhoori Party (AJP) – a nationalist party of Sindh – working in the rain-hit areas of the province including Badin district, has urged the government to lift the ban imposed on NGOs, prohibiting them from working in these areas.
The federal government has imposed a ban on foreign delegations from visiting the affected remote areas. In a statement issued on Tuesday, AJP leader Wishno Mal has said that the disaster is beyond the capacity of district government to manage. “By not allowing NGOs and other civil organisations and international donors to assist in the relief work, the Pakistan People’s Party government is monopolising resources and punishing its political opponents by not providing them relief goods,” said Mal.
He further said that government has not conducted a survey of losses incurred by growers, who have lost over a million of acres of cotton and rice crops in Badin alone. “Badin and other lower districts of Sindh are already one of the poorest and most backward places of the country but the recent rains and subsequent floods have worsened the situation,” he said. The AJP is the only party that has a relief camp in Kario Ganhwar, he said. “Other political parties should also help the suffering people of Badin,” he added.
