UNIDO executes CDM capacity building project

Under the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) thematic priority Environment and Energy, UNIDO Pakistan successfully executed a project titled “Institutional Capacity Enhancement for CDM in Pakistan”. The purpose of the project was to create a framework at the policy and implementation levels in order to benefit from the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).
“The guidelines stem from the international environmental agreement, the Kyoto Protocol to the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). The project was funded by the government of Norway with the objective to achieve sustainable development goals.”
Addressing the termination workshop of the project “Institutional Capacity Enhancement for CDM in Pakistan” held on Sunday, UNIDO-Pakistan Country Head Sadia Yousif Bakhait said the project had been successful in identifying potential in the industrial energy, renewable energy and forestry sectors, enhancing the capacity in CDM project development, carbon market development and financing mechanisms.
She said development of skills in CDM project development, building of projects and Carbon Trading Training workshops on estimation of CERs (Certified Emission Reductions) and Carbon trading for EE-specific sectors in different areas of Pakistan with the help of business and trade related organizations were the focal issues taken up. She added that awareness and sensitisation programmes for policy makers in the concerned ministries had also been completed.
Royal Norwegian Embassy Secretary Development Lise Albrechtsen appreciated the dedicated efforts of all the concerned stakeholders who had contributed to make the UNIDO CDM Programme-Pakistan a success, and said the Norwegian government wanted to supplement efforts towards enhancing capacity development of organisations working to reduce the omission of green house gases in the field of CDM.
UNIDO CDM National Programme Coordinator Tanveer Mehmood said UNIDO was a specialised agency of the United Nations dedicated to promoting Sustainable Industrial Development in developing economies. He said UNIDO acted as a catalyst to help generate national economic wealth and raise industrial capacity through its roles as a worldwide forum for industrial development and as a provider of technical cooperation services.
He gave a detailed resume about the achievements and targets of “Institutional Capacity Enhancement for CDM in Pakistan” and mentioned the valuable contributions of the government and public sector organisations which had made the programme a real success. Javed Ali Khan and other experts also spoke on the occasion.
