ISLAMABAD: The parliamentary committee on judges’ appointment could not reach a consensus on Wednesday on the Judicial Commission of Pakistan’s nominations for the chief justice and other two judges of the Islamabad High Court (IHC). The committee, which met with Senator Nayyar Bukhari in the chair, approved the Judicial Commission’s recommendations for granting one year’s extension in the tenures of additional judges of the Sindh, Balochistan and Peshawar high courts.
The Judicial Commission on December 4 had recommended the name of Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman, 56-year-old judge of the LHC, as chief justice of Islamabad High Court.
The commission had also recommended names of Tariq Anwar Kansi, a district and session judge of Quetta and Justice Riaz Khan of the Peshawar High Court as IHC judges.
Talking to reporters after the parliamentary committee meeting, Bukhari said the committee had deferred the decision on the Judicial Commission’s nominations until its next meeting on December 19.
He said the committee had approved the Judicial Commission’s recommendation of granting one year’s extension to the additional judges of the Balochistan, Sindh and Peshawar high courts.
“The one-year extension to 15 additional judges of the Balochistan, Sindh and Peshawar high courts has been approved. The committee has also confirmed the extension of Justice Abdul Aziz Kundi of the Peshawar High Court from September 2010,” he added.
