The Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Military Intelligence (MI) on Tuesday denied having detained a missing Hizbut Tahrir activist and keeping him in their custody. A single bench of the IHC, headed by Mr Justice Riaz Ahmed Khan, resumed hearing in the Dr Abdul Waheed case. Petitioner Naveed Mukhtar, making the ISI and MI DGs and the Rahim Yar Khan DPO respondents, had accused the ISI and MI of kidnapping his brother, Dr Muhammad Waheed, from Rahim Yar Khan on August 9. Maj Tahir Mahmood from the MI and Commandant Muhammad Hussain Shahbaz from the ISI appeared before the court and, through a deputy attorney general, denied detaining Dr Waheed. Mr Justice Riaz Ahmed Khan directed the ISI DG and Rahimyar Khan MI deputy director to submit counter-affidavits to the court. Umar Hayat Sindhu, counsel for the petitioner, contended that the intelligence agencies’ officials had abducted the petitioner and his brother Muhammad Waheed from Rahimyar Khan on August 9. The security agencies had released the petitioner, but his brother was still in their custody, he added. After hearing arguments from the two sides, the court directed the ISI DG and Rahimyar Khan MI deputy director to submit counter-affidavits to the court and adjourned the proceedings for two weeks. The matter will be taken up after Eidul Fitr.
