At least two people including a woman died of cholera on Monday in the Nizampur village of Nowshera District as dozens of others with similar symptoms were getting treatment at various city hospitals.
Pakistan Today learnt that the use of contaminated water triggered the cholera outbreak in the Inzari area of Nizampur village.
Khushal Welfare Society President Muhammad Ayub Khan Khattak said the villagers, who had to consume contaminated water, had no access to basic health facilities. He said a number of cholera patients had been referred to Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) and Cantonment Board Hospital in Peshawar. Meanwhile, a high-level meeting held at Chief Minister’s Secretariat Peshawar on Monday discussed the establishment of the proposed Bacha Khan Medical College in Charsadda District.
Awami National Party leader Aimal Wali Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Education Minister Sardar Hussain Babak, Minister for Higher Education Qazi Asad, Abdul Wali Khan University Vice Chancellor Dr Ihsanullah, Education Secretary Mushtaq Jadoon, Special Health Secretary Dr Noorul Emaan, CPO Zaman Khan Marwat and others attended the meeting. The meeting formed a committee which would prepare a report before August 18 about financial implications for the proposed medical college. Aimal Wali Khan said that the medical college would be functional this year and initially it would accommodate 100 students.
