Pakistan International Airline (PIA) bosses have turned a blind eye to the massive corruption and irregularities of its staff at Birmingham airport as PIA Birmingham airport Station Manager Sultan Mir has converted the national airline into a money making machine by charging fixed rates on different types of work.
Sources told Pakistan Today that Rifaqat Zaman, a close accomplice of Mir, has been made in-charge of PIA operations at Birmingham airport, adding that Zaman was involved in corruption and was therefore causing huge losses to the national carrier. “Luggage of around 20 to 30 kilogrammes can be cleared by paying 100 pounds to the agents of PIA officials who are openly operating at PIA lounge and finalising deals with people. Similarly, last minute tickets can be confirmed by paying 100-150 pounds in the form of bribe,” a source said.
Likewise, an airport source said Pakistanis families leaving for Islamabad were always stopped and humiliated at the airport by Birmingham Police on complaints of PIA officials if someone refused to oblige agents of Zaman. A PIA official in UK told Pakistan Today that Mir had already completed his tenure at Birmingham but was still working on the post due to his strong political backing.
The official further said PIA’s high ups had also received a number of complaints regarding his misbehaviour with overseas Pakistanis but no one had dared to take action against him. When contacted, PIA officials refused to comment on the issue. Pakistanis residents in the UK have urged President Asif Ali Zardari and the prime minister to take strict action against corrupt officials of PIA.
They claimed that around 90 percent of the Pakistanis traveled on PIA but they were disappointed with the corruption and humiliating attitude of the airline staff at Birmingham airport.
Does PIA not operate under British Aviation and Local laws of Birmingham City? So
why is the Station Manager and his accomplice not being reported to the authorities of the city, unless everyone is involved in this racket.
I experienced a similar situtaion at islamabad airport for my flight to london. the pia staff charged me 12000 rs for my curtains as over excess baggage despite knowing that my luggage allowance had not exceeded the limit. the incharge was quite stubborn and refused to listen to me. Some of the passengers were carrying big cooking dechkas,prayer mats dinner sets and pia management had no problem with them.When i paid 12000rs the incharge was all fine and assured me that my curtain blinds can go in the plane. there are no check and balances at the airport and these loonies are mending laws according to their requirements. I am simply disgusted at the way pia management is minting money through overseas passengers.
The facts stated are jumbled up. In fact Mr. Mir started his posting Last year. Its Mr. Ishtiaq Shah holding the office of Manager Birmingham PIA who has completed more then double the period of 3 years foreign posting i.e more then 6 years as Manager PIA and this cannot be done without the political influence. In fact he has been ordered to return many times in the past but always manipulates to change the orders.
As for Mr Zaman, he is a local PIA employee with roots and connections to the local Pakistanies settled in UK. As he is from the community, his behavior and attitude reflects same.

Actually Majid Khattak father and mother were travelling on PIA from Birmingham and they were carryying more than 150 kg excess baggage and Majid Khattak trying to threat the PIA that he is jounalist and release their excess baggage which was refused. Then he tried to hand over his parents bags to other passenger and caught by the Airport Police all records available in CC TV of Birmingham Airport. Finally they abuse the Security Staff who also catch the for carrying 3 bags each in their hand bags. In fact Majid Khattak and crupt journalist and we are going to take legal action against Majid Khattak on publishing this news which is not based on reality. Every Pakistani is happy and there is no problem of seats availability and no pax refused seats at the Airport. Travelling on a PIA flight last yr my neice had a mobile and other valuables nicked. Can`t comment on the particular case but it wouldn`t surprise me.
Sultan mir is a corrupt fucking asshole. to our great dismay the local police authorities on the airport are also with them. so there is nothing that can be done.
All the employees are corrupt because the management is corrupt and they reason why the management is corrupt is beacuse Mr. Zardari employees his friends who are not qualifed and are thoroughly corrupt so I would say stop complaining and stop flying PIA I anybody wants to sue then the defendant should be named as Mr Zaradari as he employed these crooks without crooks he cannot be named as Ali Baba and his 40 thieves!
The service that PIA provide from Birmingham is very poor- we need a Pakistan lahore and karachi direct aswell from Birmingham it is 2012 only Islamabad a joke
