The delegation of Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) held a meeting with Zafar Mahmood, Federal Secretary Commerce, Ministry of Commerce at Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) Head Office in Karachi and discussed the export target of rice for the year 2011-12.
TDAP Chief Executive Tariq Iqbal Puri along with Senior Officials of Ministry of Commerce and TDAP were also present in the said meeting. REAP Chairman Irfan Ahmed Sheikh elaborated about the performance of the rice export sector during last 2-3 years, keeping in view the facts and figures presented following estimated export targets for the year 2011-12 to the Federal Secretary Commerce. Expected rice exports for the year 2011-12 would be around 4.6 million tonnes with a turnover of $2.5 billion.
He further apprised the House about the issues and problems which are being faced by rice exporters and requested the Government of Pakistan to resolve the same on priority basis, especially the law and order situation in Karachi. Resolving these issues would not only help achieve targets but also trigger growth to surpass them.
The price of paddy being paid to the farrners/growers is very low as much as Rs.720/- per 40 Kg in district Kashmore. The growers cannot meet the input cost of paddy, highest ever increased i.e. Urea, DAP and Pestiside etc. There must be minimum price of Rs. 1500 per 40 Kg as poor people cannot now afford this price in the era of highest inflation. In the last year they faced flood situation and now the position is miserable. Ministry of commerce is requested to immediately look and probe into the matter well in time pay at least Rs. 1500 per 40 Kg as a minimum price and increase export export of rice by a set target of 4.6 Million tonnes.
a.o.a v can improve our export through rice specially at europe.
