Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa (KPK) is being run without a governor since August 07, 2011 as KPK Governor Barrister Masud Kausar is on a visit to Saudi Arabia with Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani.
According to the Constitution, the acting governor’s position had to be filled by the national assembly speaker in absence of a provincial governor. However, reliable sources told Pakistan Today that the Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa speaker assembly was still to assume office of the acting governor after Barrister Masud Kausar’s departure.
The fight for power between Speaker Kiramat Ullah Khan and Deputy Speaker Khushdil Khan when Barrister Masud Kausar had to leave for Saudi Arabia was on its peak. In absence of Kirmat Ullah Khan, Khushdil Khan had dissolved the Finance Committee. However, the speaker later ordered reversal of all decisions made by the deputy speaker in his absence.
It appeared that Kirmat Ullah Khan was reluctant to vacate the office for Khushdil Khan during Barrister Masud Kausar’s visit to Saudi Arabia. Rift between officials of People People’s Party (PPP) and Awami National Party (ANP) has continued since a coalition government was established. The speaker has always tried to get perks status, equal to the chief minister.
