The Pakistan People’s Party on Thursday suspended the basic membership of its former senator, Enver Baig, for violating party discipline and involvement in activities against the party’s interests, which included meeting PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif without seeking prior approval or informing the party leadership. Pakistan Today has learnt that Baig was being monitored for some time.
The former senator, who is very close to Makhdoom Amin Fahim, had held a number of meetings with Nawaz and other PML-N leaders in the recent past. A source said Baig might join the PML-N in the near future. In a telephonic interaction, Leader of the House in the Senate Syed Nayyer Bokhari confirmed Baig’s sacking. He said a letter had been dispatched to Baig, but Baig told Pakistan Today that he had not received any such notice.
“I have not yet received any letter and only came to know about my suspension through the media. It means Bokhari might have issued the letter to the media. However, I would not comment over it as I have not received it. Once I get the notification, I would comment on it and will also share my response with the media,” he added. Baig is not the only senior party leader believed to be in the good books of former PPP chairwoman Benazir Bhutto.
Prior to his sacking, all main party leaders believed to be close to Benazir have been suspended one by one. The list includes Senator Dr Safdar Abbasi, Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Nabeel Gabol, Dr Israr Shah, Afzal Sandhu and many others.
