ISLAMABAD: Dengue is spreading at an alarming rate in Pakistan, with the hospitals witnessing a hike in the number of patients in the past few weeks.

According to a spokesperson for the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), more than 60 patients have been brought to the hospital, out of which seven are in critical condition.

Polyclinic Hospital’s spokesperson revealed that 127 Dengue patients have been admitted to the hospital, taking the toll to 3,500 during the past one month.

In Faisalabad, two more dengue patients reached Allied Hospital due to which the total number of cases has reached 94 across the city.

Dr Masooma Sardar, hospital’s focal person, informed that the condition of five patients is out of danger.

In Multan, the number of dengue cases is on the rise as 21 new patients have reported during the last 24 at Nishtar Hospital.

On the other hand, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Health Services Dr Zafar Mirza said that according to directions issued by the premier steps are being taken on an emergency basis to control the sudden outbreak of the viral disease.

Speaking at a meeting in Islamabad on Wednesday, Mirza said the “dengue patients are being provided with free medical treatment facilities in hospitals.”

“Over 90 per cent dengue patients are not required to be admitted in hospitals,” he said.

Mirza requested the dengue patients to bring their identity cards and provide their address to the staff of the hospital so that the surveillance teams could ensure anti-dengue spray in the locality.

“Mostly the dengue cases are being reported in Islamabad and Rawalpindi,” he said and added that all the stakeholders and the administration are cooperative to eradicate the dengue virus.
