A Punjabi Student Association (PSA) activist was shot and injured when unidentified gunmen resorted to indiscriminate firing inside the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) premises on Saturday, reportedly over a dispute on wall chalking.
Reportedly, unidentified armed persons riding motorcycles entered the JPMC in the evening and opened fire at the people present inside a college building, injuring one of the persons. The victim, identified as Sabir Ali, suffered a bullet injury on his leg and was shifted to the JPMC emergency ward.
Emergency Department Head Dr Semi Jamali said the injured man was out of danger.
Meanwhile, the PSA lodged an FIR against some activists of Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT), the student wing of right-wing political party Jamaat-e-Islami. However, the IJT dismissed the allegations of PSA as baseless.
PSA activist Shahbaz Bhatti told Pakistan Today that the party activists were present inside the college when armed activists of the IJT attacked them, resulting in two of their activists getting injured. “The IJT activists are terrorists and want to disturb the law and order situation. The government should take action against such terrorist outfits; otherwise, we will announce our own strategy [for dealing with them].”
On the other hand, IJT spokesman Shoaib Ahmed said the incident took place in the evening and there was neither a single student nor any administration personnel inside the college premises. “It is the time when only the gatekeeper is on duty. The [JPMC] administration should take notice of the presence of [unauthorised] persons, involved in illegal activities inside the college during off-timings.”
Rejecting the allegations of PSA, he said the activists of nationalist party are involved in crimes inside and outside the college also.
Saddar SHO Raja Mushtaq said the clash erupted between the parties due to a controversial wall chalking. The police have brought the situation under control and there is no tension in the area, he added.
