At least 11 students were hurt in a brawl that erupted between two rival student organisations over the issue of organising a cricket tournament at the NED University of Engineering and Technology on Friday.
Insiders said that a sense of panic had been prevailing at the campus for the past four days but the varsity administration did not take any notice. As a result, the situation led to a clash between the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) and the All Pakistan Muttahida Student Organisation (APMSO).
Reportedly, the IJT had organised an inter-departmental cricket tournament in the university but as the event was underway, violence erupted inside the campus when students belonging to both the groups attacked each other with stones, sticks and iron rods. All activities in the university came to a halt after the clash.
Talking with Pakistan Today, APMSO office bearer Tauseef Ajaz said that an armed group of the IJT attacked the organisation’s activists and injured five students named Shahbaz Ahmed, Talha Ikram, Kamran Ahmed, Usha and Zeeshan Khan, who received head injuries and were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
Blaming the APMSO for initiating the attack, IJT spokesman Sohaib Ahmed also claimed that five activists of the IJT were injured in the clash. Kamran, Shahid, Shoaib, Hammad and Imran suffered serious head injuries. Hammad was admitted to the intensive care unit of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre in a critical condition, he added.
