ISLAMABAD: An accountability court on Monday was informed that former president and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari took loans worth Rs 1.5 billion from the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) in the name of a fake company registered with the name Parthenon.

A National Accountability Bureau (NAB) representative told the court that during the investigation of the Park Lane case, facts surfaced that the PPP leader committed corruption and laundered money with the help of his friends. Loans were taken by submitting fake documents to the bank, NAB representative further stated.

According to the reference, Rs1.5bn were taken in 2009 and then again in 2012, Rs 800m loans were obtained. It added that NBP suffered a total loss of Rs3.77bn due to this fraud. It further said that Zardari as president had forged documents to comply with the loan policy and influenced the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) into loan approval.

Zardari was a 25% shareholder in Park Lane Company and he also made a fake company Parthenon in the name of his employees.
