KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday granted bail to three accused in a corruption case of National Insurance Company Limited (NICL).

A two-member bench of the SHC, headed by Justice Muhammad Iqbal Kalhoro, heard the bail pleas of NICL former chairman Ayaz Khan Niazi, Muhammad Zahoor and Ameen Qasimdad and granted them the bail against the surety of Rs1 million.

Justice Kalhoro lashed out at NAB officials for its failure in producing material for a long time. Despite the passage of 10 years, you (NAB officials) could not provide material, the bench remarked.

“Do not try to mislead the court, work as per law and do not blackmail anyone,” the bench further remarked. It expressed annoyance at NAB officials and stated that do not ask it either the bail would be granted to accused or not.

The justice questioned the NAB prosecutor that he had claimed to get new material against the accused, but despite lapse of five years, it had failed to produce such material.  “We could not place the people in prison on the wishes of NAB,” the bench remarked.

The court directed the NAB prosecutor to clarify his reservations. However, the NAB prosecutor told the bench that the accused had bought thousand square feet land in Dubai at a heavy cost which resulted in the loss to the national exchequer.
