KARACHI: Thirty shops at the Kohinoor Mobile Market in Saddar – commonly known as ‘Electronics Market’- were robbed of cash and goods worth Rs 10 million in the wee hours of Friday. When the shopkeepers arrived at the market in the morning, they saw that the shutters’ locks were broken and their cash and goods gone. The shopkeepers and union representatives closed the mobile markets located at Abdullah Haroon Road in protest and chanted slogans against law enforcers. They blocked the MA Jinnah Road, causing a massive traffic gridlock for an hour.
Police said that the robbers arrived there in a Shehzore truck, broke the locks of 30 shops and escaped with cash and dozens of mobile phones. Two security guards at the market, Sohrab and Saeed Muhammad, and their guarantor, Karim, have been taken into custody by the police for interrogation.
The representatives of the Kohinoor Mobile Market Association held a meeting with the DIG South and the Preedy TPO and SHO in which they expressed security concerns, particularly for the forthcoming sensitive days of Muharram.
The DIG assured them that they would be provided security and also pledged to deploy more policemen in the area and block all adjacent roads. The police asked the market representatives to provide them the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers of all stolen mobile phones so that the robbers could be traced.
