LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday sought a reply from Punjab government and departments concerned on a petition against online taxi services.

Justice Mamoon Rashid Sheikh passed these orders on a petition filed by a citizen, Muhammad Aftab.

The petitioner’s counsel argued that online taxi companies- Uber and Careem- started their services without fulfilling legal requirements. He submitted that the companies did not obtain any permission from authorities concerned whereas it was illegal to start an online taxi service in absence of rules and regulations.

At this, the court observed that apparently it looked that the online taxi services were not regulated by neither Urban Transport nor Transport Department. The court questioned how the permission was granted to them for initiating taxi services.

The court, seeking reply from Punjab government and other respondents, adjourned further hearing till September 18.
