Agha Akbar, Pakistan Today’s former sports editor, passes away

LAHORE: Former sports editor of Pakistan Today, Agha Akbar, passed away on Sunday in Lahore after a prolonged illness.

He had a liver transplant a few months ago but due to post-operation complications, he never recovered fully.

He was associated with The Nation before joining Pakistan Today where he worked as the editor of the sports and magazine sections. He later became the business editor of the paper.

The senior journalist also headed the media department of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for a while.

At the height of his career in sports journalism, he was a heavyweight and widely respected because of his exceptional writing skills and understanding of sports, especially cricket and hockey.

He travelled far and wide to cover sporting events, including the Olympic and Asian Games, World Cups, and other major competitions.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) also expressed condolences over his demise.  “The PCB has expressed its deepest condolences on the passing of veteran cricket journalist and its former General Manager – Media, Agha Akbar,” the cricket board said in a tweet on Sunday.
