KARACHI: Younus Habib, former president of Mehran Bank, passed away on Wednesday in Karachi after suffering a brief period of illness.

As per details, his son Tariq Habib confirmed the news of his father’s demise. He said that Habib was under medical treatment at the Agha Khan Hospital since past 10 days.

Habib was the prime character of the 1990 Mehran Bank Scandal alias Mehrangate.

A case was filed in June 1996 by Air Marshal retired Asghar Khan which purported that a hefty sum of money was distributed by the country’s top spy agency to politicians to create the Islamic Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) and stop Benazir Bhutto-led Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) from coming into power in 1990 general elections.

Asghar Khan accused Habib of providing funds in the capacity of the chief executive officer (CEO) of Mehran Bank.

His funeral prayers will be offered today in Defence Housing Society after Isha prayers.
