Shab-e-Mairaj, the night of reverence and fervour, would be observed tonight across the country with religious devotion, serenity and traditional zeal.

Muslims every year on the night of 26th Rajab (the Islamic month) observe Shab-e-Mairaj — the night when the Holy Prophet (PBUH) went on a special journey to meet Allah Almighty, crossing seven skies on the heavenly animal named ‘Al-Buraq.’

The word Mairaj of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is derived from the Arabic word Urooj, which means height or ascension.

During Mairaj, the command for five daily prayers was also given to the Holy Prophet (PBUH). Female devotees arrange special gatherings inside their homes for offering special prayers all night whereas males offer prayers in mosques for seeking the blessings of Allah and pray for the welfare of the entire Muslim brethren.

Different Islamic and socio-cultural organizations also arrange special prayers and Mahafil (religious gatherings) in mosques and at other places to seek the blessings of the Almighty.
