Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Thursday proposed the constitution of a committee of senators and officials of law enforcement agencies to interrogate 154 target killers arrested in Karachi.
Winding up his debate in the Senate on Karachi violence, he said 90 of the 154 arrested men had killed 50 people each. “None of the 154 has killed less than 10 people,” Malik added. He said two senators from each party represented in the Upper House should be included in the committee for questioning the killers and unearth the facts. The interior minister also proposed a committee to examine the circumstances under which Malik Ishaq of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi was granted bail. Malik said no killer had been set free under pressure from any particular political party and he would present evidence about the killers before the proposed committee. He said the miscreants needed to be given exemplary punishment to show that the nation was united against them. Malik said Rangers had took control of the situation in Katti-Paharri area of Karachi on the second day of recent violence and it was incorrect to say that the government did not act for four days to control the situation.
