Health secy orders preparing papers for nurses’ promotion

Punjab Health Secretary Jahanzeb Khan on Thursday directed officers to immediately prepare working papers for promotion of nurses into next grades.
Jahanzeb was chairing a meeting to review the service and educational matters of nurses. He directed that cases from BPS-19 to 20 should be submitted by Monday, whereas, other promotion cases from BPS-16 to 17 be completed within eight days.. The secretary directed officers that nurses, having specialisation in any field, should be posted in hospitals in their relevant departments. Recommendations be prepared for giving special allowance to specialised nurses while gold medals would be awarded to position holder nurses in examinations, he said. Jahanzeb said that he would recommend to the chief minister to award five scholarships to nurses for getting higher education abroad.
The secretary constituted a two-member committee consisting of Institute of Public Health (IPH) Dean Professor Yaqoob Qazi and Fatima Jinnah Medical College Principal Rakhshanda Rehman to sort out the service structure of nurses and other educational issues with the assistance of the Punjab nursing DG. He said that nursing schools are being gradually upgraded into colleges and the committee would also give its recommendations regarding the curriculum and induction of nurses in BPS-16 or 17. Jahanzeb said that a capacity building programme for nurses should also be started.
He directed officers that a conducive working environment and foolproof security should be provided to nurses at their duty places.
The secretary said that seminars and workshop for sensitisation of nurses on the women protection bill should also be arranged. He said that the Best Nurse of the Year Award would be launched for attracting and encouraging female students to join the nursing profession. Jahanzeb directed officers that vacant posts of nurses should immediately be filled through ad-hoc appointments and these cases should also be sent to the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) for recruiting nurses on a regular basis.
Earlier, the Punjab nursing DG apprised the secretary of matters of service structure and educational activities of nurses. She informed the secretary regarding difficulties, which are being faced by the administration due to shortage of staff. The next meeting would be held on August 10 to review the progress of implementation on decisions taken in the meeting.
