The Safe City Project which was launched in May 2016 to ensure the security and protection of people has proved quite the opposite as pictures of passengers’ private life while commuting were leaked on Sunday.
The pictures, which mainly seem to target females, were circulated all over social media platforms, with some pages claiming that the pictures were leaked by none other than the country’s capable police department.
Social media users expressed shock and disgust, commenting that some of the pictures could be of married couples for all one knows and added that no one had the right to interfere in the personal lives of netizens or try to target women wearing the attire of her choice.
Social media users called for concerned officials of the government to be sued.
Others pointed out that the police seemed more concerned with moral policing instead of finding something actually dangerous.
Pakistani lawyer and Internet activist Nighat Dad also took to Twitter to point out that “comprehensive data protection policies following International best standards” are the need of the hour.
Something we have been pushing for a long time. Safe or smart cities require comprehensive data protection policies following International best standards. #DataProtection #PrivacyPolicy https://t.co/PLFKp2iCru
