NAPIER: Sir Rizwan on Tuesday became the meme in history to play an international match, also becoming the first cricket meme to win the Man of the Match award as Pakistan beat New Zealand in the third and final T20I by four wickets.
Replacing the real-life Mohammad Rizwan in the Napier T20I, Sir Rizwan smashed a 59-run 89 to take Pakistan in what was a consolation, but much needed, win ahead of the upcoming Test series.
Sources within the Pakistan cricket team management confirm that Mohammad Rizwan will return in place of Sir Rizwan for the Test series, in a format that the former has proven himself with.
“We realised that Mohammad Rizwan wasn’t quite delivering in the T20Is, even if doing well in other formats. So we decided to play Sir Rizwan in his place to deliver the goods,” said head coach Misbah-ul-Haq, who after receiving a lot of criticism has been praised for making the decisive change at the top of the order for the final T20I.
However, the Pakistan team management confirms that while Mohammad Rizwan will play the Tests, and captain the side for the Boxing Day match, Sir Rizwan is likely to be retained in the T20 side till the next T20I World Cup.
“It’s his position to lose now,” confirmed Misbah.
Should matters go as planned, Sir Rizwan looks likely to be the first cricket meme to have an established cricket career, with analysts already predicting the Lord to become one of the most accomplished memes in all of sport.
