THARPARKAR: Two more children died of malnutrition and other diseases at Civil Hospital Mithi, Tharparkar on Sunday.
According to local health officials, total 39 children have died of malnutrition and other diseases during this month. While total 755 children have died of malnutrition and other diseases in the current year. More than 50 children are under medical treatment at various government hospitals in the Thar region.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) had summoned the Sindh’s chief secretary and other senior officials in a case pertaining to the deaths of children due to malnutrition in Tharparkar.
Malnutrition and other health problems have taken many human lives in the area. The authorities’ callous attitude and disregard towards the problem is causing loss of innocent lives in the border district, which is rich with a huge coal reserve and other natural resources.
A report released by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in April last year stated that Pakistan is among the countries with the highest infant mortality rates.
