PTA blocks news sites reporting Egypt’s decision to sell military-owned firms

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) has blocked all the news sites that covered the Egyptian government’s announcement that it is prepared to sell off one hundred percent of firms owned by the Egyptian army.

Egypt will offer as much as full ownership in a mineral-water company and an oil firm currently held by the military, pressing ahead in seeking private investment for businesses that President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has said could be more open to the public.

As soon as international media picked up the news, the PTA swung into action, shutting down all such news reports.

“Such content is inimical to our national interests and is against our cultural values,” read a circular by the PTA. “We cannot allow the free flow of such material in the country, especially at a time like this, when the nation is surrounded by a plethora of problems.”
