Covid-19: US thanks Pakistan for donating protective gear

United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday thanked Pakistan for donating personal protective equipment (PPE) to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Taking to Twitter, the US official appreciated Pakistan’s donation of surgical masks and protective suits, terming it as a symbol of US Pakistan solidarity in the fight against coronavirus.

Earlier this month, Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA) Chief Coordinator Ijaz A Khokhar said that the garment industry is receiving international inquires about the production of masks and PPEs.

A day earlier, he had said that it is high time to switch Pakistan’s production to PPE to capture the demanding market share. He had suggested that the government should adopt an aggressive approach and open export of PPE in both non-woven and woven fabric and in different colours mainly white, light blue and light green.

“There was a huge demand for coveralls, gowns for doctors, patients, nurses, cleaning staff uniforms as well as other disposable wearables. We need to take daring steps at this juncture to capture the market share,” he had added.

He was of the view that if the government allowed the export of these products, “we can fetch more than $1 billion easily”.
