PML-N demands Afridi’s resignation over Sanaullah case

–Marriyum says PM cannot become ‘competent’ by putting opponents in jail

–Tallal says Afridi has taken a U-turn over video claims, asks him to step down for telling ‘lies’

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Wednesday demanded the resignation of Narcotics Minister Shehryar Afridi and all others who levelled “false allegations” against PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah who was granted bail in a drugs case.

In a conversation with media persons after a ceremony marking Christmas, Jinnah’s birth anniversary as well as PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif’s birthday, PML-N Spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said: “Prime Minister Imran Khan is kidnapping the political opponents.”

“The selected government is about to be toppled,” she said and added those levelling allegations against Rana Sanaullah should resign.

She said, “When the regime could not conjure up any corruption, assets beyond means or misuse of authority accusations against Rana Sanaullah, they stooped to a new low by pinning false allegations of drug trafficking. They went to the extent of repeatedly swearing falsely in the name of God Almighty to further their vicious propaganda against Rana Sanaullah. They lied on the floor of the august house in their character assassination campaign.”

Talking about the legislation regarding extension of the Chief of the Army Staff, she said the PMLN will make the right decision in the greater national interest and that of the respectable national institution. The government should not act as if it is the only deciding power in this matter.

She said Musharraf’s cabinet and rented spokespersons should mind their language and should refrain from making national institutions controversial with their stupid and naive statements.

She said the “real misuse of authority is shutting down Malam Jabba case using the powers of premiership; squashing the PTV and parliament attack case; moving the court to stop investigation of corruption in Peshawar metro; halting the inquiry of corruption into the billion tree tsunami scam; shutting parliament down to gag criticism; gagging of news shows in the middle”.

Marriyum said the real reason behind arrest of Ahsan Iqbal was that Imran could not stomach the truth being told by Ahsan Iqbal regarding the failures of the imposed PTI regime.

Marriyum said every illegally abducted PML-N leader has demanded that his trial be held as openly as possible in front of media which is the true testament of their transparency and innocence. While, on the other hand, she said, Imran Khan has requested that the foreign funding case be kept under wraps and should not be made public.

Speaking on the occasion, former national assembly speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said that instead of contacting the opposition over army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa’s tenure extension, the government has started targeting the opposition.

Meanwhile, PML-N leader Tallal Chaudhry also censured Minister Afridi for failing to produce video evidence against Sanaullah in spite of his multiple claims of possessing such a proof. Responding to the presser of the minister, Tallal said the minister took a U-turn by saying that he had “spoken of footage and not a video”.

“Shehryar Afridi has become a ‘U-turn Niazi’ […] he should apologise to the nation as neither evidence nor video is available [to him],” the PML-N leader said, asking Afridi to resign for telling “lies”.

“The nation has seen that Rana Sanaullah was kept imprisoned for seven months on the basis of a lie,” he said, adding that he could see no sign of humiliation, shame and regret on the face of the minister, instead continued arrogance. “The nation was waiting for Shehryar Afridi to present the video to today.”
