KARACHI: Medico-Legal Department of Karachi has decided to establish four more Female Medico-Legal Examination Centres in Karachi hospitals to deal with gender based violence (GBV) cases on urgent basis.
The Female Medico-Legal Examination Centres are being established in Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi, Sindh Government Qatar Hospital Orangi Town, Sindh Government Hospital Saudabad and Sindh Government Hospital Korangi in the interest of public and rapid response to the gender based violence (GBV).
Presently, only four Women Medico- Legal Officers (WMLOs)are working under department out of total nine sanctioned posts.
Karachi Police Surgeon, Dr Qarar Abbasi, while talking to PPI, said in the interest of general public and rapid response to gender based violence (GBV), it has been decided to establish more centres for female medico legal examinations in the megacity.
He informed that department has been facing acute shortage of WMLOs therefore female cases are facing lot of problems for medico-legal examination.
Dr Qarar Abbasi has directed Additional Police Surgeons to liaison with Medical Superintendents for establishment of for more Female Medico-Legal Examination Centres and posting of MWLOs those were assigned to work in Medico-Legal Department.
On 5 March 2018 vide Government Notification No. SO. VII (H) COM/2017, 46 Women Medical Officers (WMOs) (BPS-17) were assigned to work as WMLOs in different hospitals of Karachi under Medical Superintendents.
