KARACHI: Heavy downpour in the city claimed three lives and left several others injured on Friday. Different parts of the city received moderate to heavy rainfall and life was brought to a standstill as soon water started gathering on the streets and roads.

As per the latest reports, at least three people lost their lives after getting electrocuted and several others got injured in minor accidents and electricity-related incidents.

Police told media that, “two people from Karachi’s SITE area died due to rain-related incidents, while another death was from Orangi area.”

“Abdul Rauf and Abdul Manan were commuting on separate bikes when electric wires fell on them and due to that they suffered extreme electric shock and died on the spot,” Site-A SHO Saleem Awan told media.

Rainfall and gathered water in many parts of the city disrupted routine life and also affected the regular supply of electricity. Where people let out a sigh of relief for getting rid of scorching sun and hot weather, they also prayed for discontinuation of rain as now it has started to interrupt the flow of their lives.

More than 350 feeders of the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation have tripped, affecting electricity supply to Azizabad, New Karachi, North Nazimabad, Gulistan-e-Johar, among other areas.

“Around 130mm of rain has been recorded in Karachi during the past few weeks and that was way more than what we had expected from this spell. 45mm of rain was recorded in Saddar, 45mm in Surjani, 20mm in Landhi, 32mm in Masroor/Mauripur, 27mm in North Karachi, 11mm in Shareh-e-Faisal, 1.4mm in the Airport area,” Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfraz told media.

He also added that more rain is expected on the weekend and in the next week.

Karachi Electric spokesperson Adil Murtaza directed people to stay away from wiring and poles as they can prove hazardous due to the accumulated water around them.

“As a precautionary measure, electricity has been disconnected in several parts and will be restored once the water is drained,” he added.
