Pakistan told the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about its decision to become a subscriber to the Guidance on the Management of Disused Radioactive Sources, the Foreign Office said in a statement.

In that statement, the spokesperson said that although there is no legal obligation on a country to adhere to the Guidance supplements the Code of Conduct on the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources, still Pakistan decided to subscribe to it as it is important and internationally recognised component of the global nuclear safety.

The Code of Conduct, details procedures and protocols that can help countries to ensure that their reserves of radioactive sources are used under extreme precautionary measures and without putting anyone or environment in peril.

It was mentioned in the communiqué that Pakistan has been following the Code of Conduct since 2005 and has put all necessary steps in place as per recommendations of the code.

The document praised Pakistan for using all the radioactive sources as per recommendations and safely.

“Pakistan’s subscription to IAEA’s Guidance on Management of Disused Radioactive Sources demonstrates its continued commitment to the latest international standards in the areas of nuclear non-proliferation, safety and security,” the document concluded.
