In a week: Punjab Police torture third suspect to death

LAHORE: The post-mortem report of Amir Masih, a gardener who was in illegal police custody, has confirmed that his death occurred due to severe torture done by Lahore police.

On September 3, Amir was killed in custody and later, his family accused police of his death and demanded a prompt inquiry into this matter.

Earlier six police officers, including a sub-inspector, were nominated in a criminal case for the alleged torture of Amir. As per the post-mortem report, torture marks were visible on Amir’s hands, feet, back and arms. His ribs were also broken.

In closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, Masih can be seen being dragged by two policemen into a hospital on a motorcycle.

Punjab Inspector-General (IG) Arif Nawaz Khan took notice of the incident and registered a case against SI Zeeshan, Investigation Officer Nasir Baig and four other officers and asked for a detailed report.

Details of the post-mortem report also mention that along with bruise marks, Amir’s ribs were also fractured.

Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has also taken notice of the incident and has ordered for the formation of a judicial commission and the removal of the District Police Officer.

This comes after another suspected criminal died under police custody. Salahuddin Ayubi whose video of breaking in into an ATM booth last month had gone viral was arrested from Rahim Yar Khan and was reported dead on September 1. Two police officers were implicated in the case.
