Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said that the opposition delegation got the taste of the “draconian administration” and the “brute force” unleashed on the people in India occupied Kashmir when the Indian opposition leaders tried to visit Kashmir on Saturday.

According to a Times of India report, an opposition delegation led by Rahul Gandhi reached Srinagar on Saturday but was sent back by the government just hours after it landed at the airport.

Taking to Twitter, Rahul Gandhi said that it has been 20 days since the government decided to scrap the provisions of Article 370 that, he said, curtailed the “freedom and civil liberties” of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

“It’s been 20 days since the people of Jammu & Kashmir had their freedom and civil liberties curtailed. Leaders of the Opposition and the press got a taste of the draconian administration and the brute force unleashed on the people of J&K when we tried to visit Srinagar yesterday,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

Rahul Gandhi also tweeted a video in which he is seen telling J&K officials that he was invited by Governor Satya Pal Malik and if the situation was normal, as has been claimed by the government, the leaders should be allowed to visit Kashmir.

After landing at the Delhi airport, Rahul Gandhi said that the media persons who were with the delegation were mishandled and beaten up and the situation in Jammu and Kashmir “clearly is not normal”.

Rahul Gandhi said that the delegation wanted to get a sense of what people were going through in the region but “we were not allowed beyond the airport”.

Rahul Gandhi said, “Some days ago I was invited by the governor to visit J&K. I accepted the invitation. We wanted to get a sense of what people are going through, but we weren’t allowed beyond the airport. Press people with us were mishandled, beaten. It’s clear that the situation in J&K isn’t normal.”

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad also said that the situation in the state is “terrifying”.
