Maryam holds rally in Faisalabad

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz on Sunday reached Faisalabad to address a public gathering in support of her incarcerated father Nawaz Sharif.

As she reached Faisalabad, the PML-N leader lauded the spirit demonstrated by the supporters who thronged the venue to express their “love” for former premier Nawaz Sharif despite hurdles placed by the government on their way in the form of containers.

However, in a later tweet, the PML-N VP said that her rally was “stopped by police”.

“The miles long rally has been blocked by putting containers. I am at the head end, whereas the rest of the rally has been cut off,” she said.

“It’s an ocean of people. I have no words to explain what a spectacle it is ! Allah be praised!” she tweeted as she reached Faisalabad.

The electronic media was reportedly barred from broadcasting the rally, which was also pointed out by the PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal and Marriyum Aurganzeb in tweets.

Maryam had yet to address the rally by the time this story went to press.

Talking to the media before leaving for Faisalabad, Maryam said that a “government that has to shut down [opposition] leaders, that has to arrest political workers, block rallies and roads is counting its days”.

A picture of Maryam, in a green dress with an image of her father and slogan of ‘Free Nawaz Sharif’, ready to depart for the rally was also shared on the party’s Twitter account.
