Bizenjo warns against bid to delay no-confidence motion against Sanjrani

ISLAMABAD: The opposition in the Senate on Friday reemphasised their resolve to remove Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani from his post and maintained that this change is inevitable.

Opposition leader Mir Hasil Bizenjo, the opposition’s joint candidate for Senate chairman, in a media talk after a meeting of opposition leaders on Friday, said that a letter has been sent to the Senate secretariat.

“In the letter, it has been clearly said that the constitution allows for a no-confidence motion to be brought against the Senate chairman. And if the motion is accepted through a majority, the chairman has to step down,” he said.

He insisted that opposition has the required number of 50 to oust Sanjhrani conveniently and by Monday the number of senators will be more than 60.

“If any attempt to delay the motion is made, it will be a violation of the Constitution. So, I suggest that a session is called immediately and voting should take place,” Bizenjo said.

The letter sent to the Senate secretariat also challenged Sanjrani’s claim which he made in a letter sent to PPP’s parliamentary leader in Senate Sherry Rehman, stating that a no-confidence motion could not be moved in a requisitioned session.

Opposition leaders while responding to this, said that the constitution doesn’t forbid the use of a requisition motion to bring up a no-confidence motion during a Senate session.

In yesterday’s meeting, at least 54 of the 66 opposition senators showed the resolve to not withdraw the no-confidence motion against the Senate chairman.

Sherry Rehman, in yesterday’s meeting, said that along with the opposition, it’s also the government’s duty to play its part in preserving prestige of the Senate.
