NAB to probe ‘Rs1bn scam’ that led to anchorperson’s murder

KARACHI: The investigators who are probing the murder of news anchor Mureed Abbas have requested the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to investigate into the financial scam involving over 1billion rupees, which according to them “could be the reason for murder”.

In this regard,  Senior Superintendent of Police, Investigation-I South Zone has forwarded a request to the NAB authorities to initiate the investigation to ascertain the reasons behind the murder of anchor Mureed Abbas who was shot dead recently by his friend-cum-business partner.

“It is submitted that case FIR No 382/2019 u/s 302, 34 PPC was registered at PS Darakhshan in which TV anchor Mureed Abbas was killed along with his friend Khizar Hayat by accused Atif Zaman. The accused was arrested within half an hour in injured condition as he attempted suicide”, according to an official letter, a copy of which is available with Pakistan Today.

“It is further that during the investigation of the case it came to fore with sufficient documentary evidence that motive behind the dual murder was financial scam by arrested Atif Zaman involving an amount of more than a billion PKR”, it added.

Further, the number of victims of this financial scam is more than 100. All the credentials of the case directly invite NAB jurisdiction. As the scam involve some staff of the media group as investors, police will face immense pressure for recoveries and will earn a bad name if someone is not obliged.
