Karachi police chief transferred in major reshuffle

KARACHI: The police chief of Karachi Amir Ahmed Shaikh was transferred from his post on Monday in a major reshuffle.

Amir Ahmed Shaikh and seven other high-ranking police officers in Sindh were either transferred or removed from their posts.

According to reports, IG Sindh Dr Syed Kaleem Imam met Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on Monday for a meeting in which Chief Secretary Sindh Mumtaz Ali Shah was also present.

After the consultation, the provincial government decided to transfer the Karachi police chief as well as other officers.

According to a recently passed police act, the provincial government can transfer and post police officers in consultation with the IG Sindh.

The chief minister had some differences with the outgoing police chief as he didn’t “entertain some demands made by the top PPP leadership” present in the city, the media reports alleged.

However, CM House clarified that the city police chief was dismissed because the chief minister wasn’t “satisfied with his overall performance due to an increase in street crimes”.

However, others refuted such reports, saying Amir Shaikh “declined to oblige PPP leadership” so he was replaced.

Grade-21 officer Amir Ahmed Shaikh was appointed Additional IG Operations and Ghulam Nabi Memon took charge as the Karachi police chief.

It should be mentioned here that Memon will be taking up policing duties after a hiatus of eight years.

Before serving for three years in Pakistan High Commission in London, he served in Intelligence Bureau in Sindh. He was recently promoted to Grade-21 and had his services placed with the Sindh government.
