Maryam not involved in internal party affairs, PML-N tells ECP

–PML-N counsel urges ECP to impose heavy fine on petitioner for levelling ‘baseless’ accusations

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz has nothing to do with the internal affairs of the party, the PML-N informed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in response to a plea challenging her appointment as the vice president of the party.

Responding to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s plea against her appointment as the PML-N vice president, the reply stated that Maryam was not involved in the internal affairs of the party, so allegations levelled against the party VP were “baseless and false”.

The counsel argued that Articles 62 and 63 of the constitution were applicable on party heads not on officials, urging the ECP to impose a heavy penalty on Malika Bukhari for misleading the commission.

On May 3, PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif approved major changes to the party’s structure, including Maryam’s appointment as vice president of the party — among a list of 16 vice presidents — for the first time.

Subsequently, MNAs Farrukh Habib, Maleeka Ali Bokhari, Kanwal Shauzab and Javeria Zafar had submitted a petition to the ECP challenging the move.

The petition had argued that Maryam’s appointment as a vice president of the PML-N is in conflict with the law and Constitution. It also covers the legal basis under which Maryam is ineligible to hold public office and includes a detailed mention of court decisions.
