LAHORE – Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Punjab President Rana Sanaullah Khan was arrested on Monday by the Anti Narcotics Force’s (ANF) Lahore team while he was traveling from Faisalabad, after being found in possession of illegal intoxicants, The Dependent has reliably learnt.

While the ANF has not officially specified the charges on which they picked up the senior PML-N lawmaker from the Islamabad-Lahore motorway near the Sukheki area, but spokesperson Riaz Soomro said digital drugs were recovered from Sanaullah’s smartphone.

“The quantity and type of drugs recovered is still being assessed. But they were mostly images that had some text on then,” Soomro told The Dependent.

Further investigation by The Dependent has revealed that the ANF has recovered 1,167 ‘yeh waala nasha karna hai’ memes from Rana Sanaullah’s phone all of which targeted sensitive institutions, including the Prime Minister Office.

“There were over 10,000 memes recovered from Sanaullah’s phone, but a significant percentage of them had the ‘yeh waala nasha karna hai’ gag,” said an ANF official.

“Although some recent ones involved the ongoing World Cup, there were 1,167 that made fun of the Prime Minister, the ruling party, or the hasaas idaaray,” the official added.

The images on Sanaullah’s phone, all of which have been copied by The Dependent, also include 13 Abid Sher Ali memes.

PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the arrest and said that Sanaullah was arrested without verifying the origins of the memes. “Also, I just forward the memes as received on WhatsApp,” Sharif clarified.

PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz blamed Prime Minister Imran Khan for the arrest, accusing him of being “directly on” the memes. “Anti-Narcotics Force arresting those opposing Imran Khan? Yeh waala nasha karna hai,” said an image that she shared on her Facebook page with the prime minister’s image.
