Court okays reference against Durrani

KARACHI: A reference against Sindh Assembly’s speaker Agha Siraj Durrani pertaining to the assets beyond means has formally been approved for hearing by an Accountability Court (AC) on Monday.

The court announced its decision while hearing Durrani’s plea seeking reference not to be approved for hearing.

The court dismissed Durrani’s plea and approved the reference for hearing.

According to NAB’s reference, names of 62 witnesses have been included in the reference and 5000 documents will be produced as proof in the court.

The NAB had named 20 persons, including Agha Siraj, his wife, four daughters, one son, a brother and servants as accused persons in the reference filed the court in Karachi after an inquiry, which continued for three months and 10 days.

It is pertinent to mention here that Durrani has been in jail on judicial remand. According to the NAB charge-sheet, the accused were involved in corruption of up to Rs 1.6 billion.

NAB had arrested Speaker Sindh Assembly Agha Siraj Durrani from a hotel in Islamabad in February this year.
