GHOTKI: Sardar Muhammad Baksh, who had tendered his resignation to Sindh Assembly a few days ago, has been nominated by Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) for NA-205 by-poll in Ghotki.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had himself proposed name of Sardar Muhammad Baksh for the purpose.
The by-polls are taking place after the death of Narcotics Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Sardar Ali Mahar.
It may be noted that the prime minister last week visited Ghotki to condole the death of Mahar.
During the visit, the premier had assured the Mahar family that he won’t let PPP ‘rig’ the by-polls when Ali Gohar Mahar feared that the PPP might rig the upcoming by-election.
However, his visit didn’t sit down well with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), which put the PM on a notice for violating the ECP’s code of conduct.
The notice issued to the PM had stated that “being a member of the parliament and holding the chair of the prime minister, you [Imran] were fully aware of the announcement schedule of the by-election … which requires that you cannot visit the constituency in any manner.”
It further asked the PM to explain his position within a week of receiving the notice, further warning that disciplinary action could be taken against him if he fails to do so.
According to the letter issued by the chief election body, a complaint against the visit was registered by Abdul Bari Pitafi, a candidate from the constituency, who pointed out that PM Imran’s visit to Ghotki was “in violation with the ECP code of conduct as the schedule for the by-election has already been notified”.
