LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has given the Punjab government four weeks to come up with a strategy regarding a ban on single-use plastic products.
The petition on plastic pollution titled ‘Syed Shahmeer Raza and others vs Federation of Pakistan’ was taken up by a three-bench of the high court.
The advocate general and chief secretary made appearance on behalf of the Punjab government.
They informed the court that legislation was being prepared on the said issue, especially the ban on polythene bags.
He further stated that Prime Minister Imran Khan has issued instructions to the provinces to take immediate measures to curb the menace.
Muhammad Zafar Iqbal and Osama Zafar, counsels representing the petitioners, urged that the government should ban single-use plastics in totality.
The government sought six weeks’ time to come up with legislation in this regard, but the bench owing to the severity of the matter only granted four weeks.
If the government does not take adequate measures the court shall intervene, the bench said.
