Journalist manhandling case: Court extends interim bail of accused for fifth time

ISLAMABAD: Additional District Session Judge Basit Aleem on Wednesday approved the interim bail of Hassan Khalil Noon and Saad Habib Kiyani – accused of manhandling a journalist – for the fifth time sans any arguments.

Farid Sabri, a reporter of private news channel based in Islamabad, tried to disclose the liaison between police, city administrators and Sheesha Cafés’ owners by publishing a special report on it but he was manhandled by the mafia at E-7 on May 16. Simultaneously, a case was registered at Kohsar Police Station under non-bailable Sections 382, 506 ii, 148 and 149 PPC.

During the hearing on Wednesday, accused Saad Kiyani requested the court to grant him interim bail as he has to attend his sister’s wedding. Earlier, his interim bail was approved after his lawyer told the court that the accused’s father underwent an operation and he is his attendant.

For the fifth time, the judge approved the interim bail of Hisaan Khalil Noon and Saad Kiyani till June 18 without hearing arguments of the other side. Another accused, Basim Kiyani is also on interim bail till June 18.

On June 3, the same court cancelled the bail due to absence and non-serious behaviour of two aforementioned accused and ordered the police to arrest them but Islamabad Police failed to arrest the influential accused persons.

Meanwhile, just two hours after the cancellation of bail by Judge Basit Aleem on June 3, the accused again filed the request for their bail and they were granted bail till June 12.

One accused Hisaan Khalil Noon is the son of Tehzeeb Bakery’s owner, Khalil Noon, and two others are nephews of former DG Education Atif Kayani. It is to be noted that the said journalist is continuously receiving life threats from the above-mentioned mafia.
