–MotoGP legend admits he’s ready to switch from two wheels to four – albeit temporarily
Motorsport legend Gerhard Berger, who now runs touring car series DTM, coaxed Andrea Dovizioso into competing last weekend.
Rossi had also been tipped to take part. However, The Doctor turned down the chance to race as a guest rider.
Dovizioso got behind the wheel of an Audi RS5 – and Rossi was expected to showcase his skills in a BMW.
And Rossi insists he’ll be involved in the series at some point along the line.
“Yeah for sure, I didn’t see the race but I know the result and I followed Dovi.
“It’s a great pleasure because Gerhard invited me for Misano. Unfortunately, this time I did not come.
“But I promised that one time, not so far [in the future], that I will come.”
Dovizioso and Rossi maintain a fierce rivalry on the track.
Nevertheless, the Italian duo socialise together and have a solid friendship.
Dovizioso was snapped training on his motocross bike with the old master earlier this week.
When asked by Motorsport.com if he was shocked that Rossi tracked his progress, Dovizioso replied: “I’m not surprised because he has a big passion for the sport, like me.
“He wanted to understand and analyse what riders can do in that championship, so it was nice.”
Rossi will be looking to get back on track this weekend in Catalonia after a challenging few weeks.
The 40-year-old is still suffering with mechanical issues on his Yamaha M1.
“I suffer from the start in third or fourth gears,” Rossi said after the Mugello showpiece.
“It’s not only top speed, but also acceleration.
“When you’re slow everything is difficult, you have to try things, we’re worried because we want to try more.”
