A team of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Monday visited Kot Lakhpat Jail and questioned ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif regarding the illegal use of government-issued bulletproof cars.

According to reports, a four-member NAB team led by NAB Additional Director Hammad Hussain Niazi and including Deputy Director Abdul Majid questioned Nawaz for allegedly importing and illegally using 33 bulletproof vehicles from Germany.

NAB sources claimed that, on paper, the vehicles were imported to accommodate guests attending the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Conference in 2016. However, after the conference, 20 of the 33 vehicles were allegedly added to Nawaz’s personal motorcade while the rest were given to his daughter and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Maryam Nawaz.

On May 21, Islamabad Accountability Judge Muhammad Arshad had allowed NAB to interrogate Nawaz about the alleged misuse of the 20 bulletproof vehicles.

The graft-buster has already interrogated PML-N leader and former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, former principal secretary to the prime minister Fawad Hasan Fawad and former foreign secretary Aizaz Chaudhry in connection with the case.

According to NAB, the former foreign secretary approved the summary to import the bulletproof vehicles from Germany.
