SC rejects bail petition of ‘Double Shah’

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the bail petition of Afzaal Akhlaq alias Double Shah involved in defrauding people of billions of rupees.

Justice Azmat Saeed, while rejecting the bail plea, remarked that the plunderers of people could not be given any relief.

Double Shah, a conman, cheated billions of rupees from people by promising them of multiplying their money within a small span of time.

Additional Prosecutor General of NAB informed the bench that a reference was filed against Double Shah in 2016.

National Accountability Bureau Prosecutor Nayyar Rizvi said that the number of the scam victims of Double Shah is 3540. He had inflicted a loss of over 12.5 billion rupees to general public, the NAB counsel said.

The court has earlier rejected three bail petitions of Double Shah, the prosecutor said. His two accomplices involved in the fraud are still at large, the NAB prosecutor further said.

Earlier, while pleading for bail Double Shah’s counsel said that his client was in jail for last four years.

The bench, however, turned down the bail petition.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Lahore has returned Rs169.68 million to 1,474 affectees of the Double Shah scam after recovering the amount from the fraudster.

NAB officials said that the bureau has recovered Rs1.2 billion in double shah case.
