Ministry of Science prepares lunar calendar for five years

The Ministry for Science and Technology has prepared the lunar calendar for the next five years.

The experts of the ministry prepared the lunar calendar on the instructions of Minister Fawad Chaudhry.

According to reports, Chaudhry has asked the Council of Islamic Ideological (CII) about the recommendations and publishing of calendar in Ramzan. He contacted CII and informed them about the preparation of calendar.

The calendar would be presented before the cabinet after approval from CII.

Earlier on Monday, Fawad invited Ruet-e-Hilal Committee head Mufti Muneebur Rehman and Imam of Peshawar’s Masjid Qasim Ali Khan Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai to see how easy science has made to predict the lunar calendar.

While taking a jibe at both religious leaders, Fawad tweeted that he invites both Mufti Muneeb and Mufti Popalzai to sight Eidul Fitr moon and experience how easy science has made it to calculate the starting of Ramzan and moon sighting.

Earlier this month, he proposed that science and technology should be used to sight moon, and claimed that unnecessary expenditures and controversies will be averted once a ten-year moon calendar is created when a spar between Science Minister and Islamic clerics started.

On May 7, Fawad announced that a committee has been constituted to finalise the calendar to indicate the exact dates of Ramzan, Eidul Fitr, Eidul Azha and Muharram for the next five years with 100% accuracy.

According to details, the committee comprises Dr Muhammad Tariq Masood (Joint Scientific Adviser, Ministry of Science and Technology), Waqar Ahmad (Lecturer, Meteorology Department, CUI, Islamabad), Nadeem Faisal (Deputy Director, Meteorology Department), Abu Nasan (Deputy Director, Meteorology Department) and Ghulam Murtaza (DCM, SUPARCO, Islamabad).
