GUJRANWALA: Punjab Police on Wednesday arrested Abdul Rehman Makki — the brother-in-law of proscribed Jamaatud Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed.

Reportedly, Makki’s arrest took place during a crackdown against the banned religious outfit.

Makki – who was arrested under Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance, 1960 – was accused of hate speech against the state’s crackdown against religious outfits in a bid to curb right-wing extremism under Financial Action Task Force (FATF) guidelines.

Makki heads the JuD’s political and international affairs wing and is currently the in-charge of its charity wing, Falah-e-Insaniat Foundation.

In March, the government initiated a crackdown against religious organisations banned under the National Action Plan (NAP). A total of 182 seminaries were seized by the government and over 100 activists were taken into custody as part of a push against banned groups, followed by the freezing of their accounts and seizure of assets.
