Defending his government’s decision to go into an IMF loan program despite years of a political stance against any such deal, Prime Minister Imran Khan said that he was informed of the deal through television and that he really wasn’t aware of it otherwise.
“The way I didn’t know, earlier, that the Rupee was going to be devalued, I also didn’t know that we were entering into a loan program with the IMF,” said Imran Khan, speaking to The Dependent in Bani Gala. “I shall have to speak to Hafeez and see what if the matter is. I’m very serious. The people of the country shall not be kept in the dark.”
“I had just had iftar and was busy playing with blocks (Lego) with the TV playing in the background,” he continued. “Much to my surprise, I found out that we were entering into a three-year $6 billion program.”
“Pakistanis know that as their prime minister, I can never lie to them,” he said. “Or take an unpopular decision. Or appear to have taken an unpopular decision.”
