–If this isn’t political victimisation then what is, asks former premier

Former premier and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Tuesday lashed out at the government for arresting Ishtiaq Ameer Muqam, the son of party’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) President Amir Muqam, over corruption allegations in Alpuri Road project.

Abbasi said this while speaking at a press conference, flanked by other party leaders, including Ahsan Iqbal. He said that Ishtiaq had been arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) after it had registered a case against him a day earlier for corruption in Alpuri Road in KP’s Shangla district. He also said that the agency tried to involve Muqam into the case as well.

“If this is not political victimisation, then what is it,” he asked. The former premier also said that the government is trying to cover up its own failures by politically victimising its opponents.

Abbasi also asked why the National Highway Authority (NHA) had not lodged a complaint in the past four years if there was any financial wrongdoing. He added that just because there was an error in construction, it does not necessarily mean there was any corruption.

On Monday, FIA’s Anti-Corruption Wing arrested Ishtiaq son over alleged corruption in a road construction project. He is said to be among the five contractors arrested upon the completion of the inquiry into the matter.
